Claim Back Your Home: Spring Cleaning Purge vs. Purchase Guide

Updated: May 25

Spring cleaning can be overwhelming, intimidating, and highly likely to cause procrastination, but dedicating some much-needed TLC to your space doesn’t have to be a daunting task. A light declutter or deep-clean is a great way to re-organize and refresh your life without a drastic overhaul or major investment. If you’re not sure where to begin, we’ve got some recommendations for simplifying and purifying the home so you can get organized and stay that way. Here are our tips on what to purge and what to purchase to claim back your home.

Purge: Old Cookware & Mismatched Food Containers

The kitchen is for cooking and coming together, not for chaos. For a neat kitchen start by tossing old food containers with missing lids and ditch the plastic. Get rid of old, scratched pots and pans and keep only your favorites and most used on hand.

Purchase: Glass Storage Containers Cast Iron Skillet

Keep your kitchen contained with this array of glass food storage containers. Glass might be heavier, but it’s also safer and sturdier. The containers are stackable and transparent, which is perfect for fridge organization and for easy identification of last night’s leftovers.

You’ll feel confident nixing that scratched up non-stick frying pan if you’ve got a cast iron in your collection. It can be used on the stove top and in the oven, which eliminates the need for both a pot and a pan. And, like Brad Pitt and fine wine—two things we love—it gets better with time.

Purge: Aerosol Air Fresheners

Synthetic air fresheners merely mask smells instead of eliminating them, and they contain contaminants, hormone-disruptors, and carcinogenic chemicals that can pose health risks. For a safer alternative opt for an essential oil diffuser like this Ultrasonic Humidifiers Aromatherapy Diffuser (also featured on our Reclaim Your Sleep guide, so you know it’s multifaceted) or an all-natural candle like these eco-friendly, paraben-free Lulu Candles.

Purchase: Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Multi-Surface Everyday Cleaner & Baking Soda

Start with a clean slate, literally. This quick and easy multi-surface spray is a versatile essential for your cleaning cabinet. It’s safe to use on most surfaces and has a light scent that leaves areas feeling fresh without any pungent chemical odors.

Baking soda is the queen of cleaning products, the almighty ruler of revitalization. Use it to scrub the shower and tub, to remove stains and odors, and even to help indigestion and whiten your teeth. It’s a jack of all trades.  This choice is all-natural and in bulk.

Purge: Old Clothing & Flimsy Hangers

Confront the closet head-on. Start by parting with clothes that don’t fit, are stained, and don’t spark joy. That sequined number in the back of the closet you didn’t even remember you had? Probably time to toss. Anything that no longer fits properly is a no-brainer—donate it. The separation anxiety might be real, but you’ll feel so much better when you let go.

We highly recommend ThredUp where you can choose to sell, donate or recycle your old clothes. They send you a bag, you fill it, they take care of the rest.

Ditch the broken hangers and the metal wire ones you kept from the dry cleaner. Coordinated hangers are an easy way to spruce up your closet and motivate you to keep it organized.

Purchase: Storage Bins & Space Saver Hangers

Whether you’ve got a walk-in closet or a tiny one, keeping it in order will make things run smoothly and efficiently while optimizing the space. Keep things tidy and easily accessible with stackable storage bins for shoes, oversized sweaters, bags, anything.

If you’ve never double or tripled-up on the hanger, we should be taking tips from you. If your hangers hold multiple pairs of slacks and skirts these space-saving hangers can help keep things orderly and wrinkle-free.
